Golf Glove Terms Glossary
BENCH CUT -a leather cutting process
developed in France
before 1600 which premeasures and stretches by hand a "blocker" or
rectangle with precise directional stretchability for perfect glove fit.
Still valid after 400 years, a long training period is required to master
this method.
BIOTAN - a tanning process developed
by USGlove Co. Inc.(r) to conform to E.P.A. standards eliminating
environmentally unfriendly chemicals. The resulting leather is inert to the
effects of sweat, sun and weather and can be machine washed and dried.
CABRETTA - a generic term used for
sheep which have hair instead of wool, resulting in a much closer grain and
stronger leather than any other.
CAVITY BASED - creating random cavities in
the base matrix of a synthetic leather (such as USGlove Co., Inc.'s SYNTAN)
to improve the gripping surface and reduce bulk, thereby creating flexibility
and softness.
COOLMAX- a DuPont (r) fabric made
from premium four-channel fibers. As the hand sweats, the fabric channels the
moisture to the surface where it evaporates. This unique combination of
wicking and evaporating keeps the hand drier and more comfortable
ETHIOPIAN SHEEP - a "Hair Sheep" or
Aoudad which lives at high altitudes on the Ethiopian plateau in East Africa. The most appropriate raw material for golf
gloves because of natural thinness, fine grain and softness.
HIGH FREQUENCY - a term applied to precision
logo making in which a combination of heat molding and silk screening can
miniaturize artwork too detailed for embroidery.
LOCKSTITCH - a sewing technique in which
each stitch contains a loop and overthread for a non-raveling flexible seam.
MICROFIBER - a miniaturized bit of
polyester which is formed with other bits into a matrix which becomes the
base of synthetic leather. The best micro fibers come from Europe, although Japan
also offers them in varying quality.
POLARTEC- a temperature control fabric
invented by Malden Mills made of multi-layered polyester velours which have
extreme softness and the unique ability to both insulate and ventilate.
SYNTAN - When applied to leather, an
artificial tanning agent; but in synthetics, the name coined by USGlove Co.,
Inc. for the tacky, tough polyurethane-based impregnation which can be varied
as to surface gripping pattern and tackiness, which forms the outer layer of
synthetic leather.
